 In college, Don Likens studied Electronics. He then spent 19 years in the retail and mass merchandising business. Electronics involved numerical calculations and being analytical. On the other hand, retail meant long hours, persistence, dealing with the public and preparing appealing presentations.
As opposite as these professions are, they were very instrumental in preparing him for his last 27 years as an Insurance Professional. In 1982, Don changed careers to enter the insurance industry. During his first year he was selected “New Agent of the Year” for a national insurance company. He also qualified for their National Sales Conference. Interestingly enough, he was their last new agent of the year and last sales conference selectee. That was not a good sign; however the company was sold to a larger company. Don joined American Heritage Life in 1987 as a Sales Manager. He was given the largest individual region within the company, and Don’s region continued to lead the company’s production during his career there. In 1992, Don, along with Phyllis Stoll, formed Benefit Services Group, selling and enrolling voluntary benefits. Very quickly the agency redirected itself into an enrollment firm, providing full enrollment & communication services for the insured, employer and broker community. The firm consistently ranked in the top 15 producers for Allstate Workplace Division. As the industry and technology evolved, so did their agency. It quickly became one of the very few select firms for which carriers would provide access to create their enrollment platforms.
Don and his wife Judy grew up in Jacksonville, Florida. They met in high school and recently celebrated their 40 anniversary. A large part of their life together was spent raising their son Kevin and working with his sports teams, but they still managed to find time to volunteer with their church and with Kiwanis International. Don’s hobbies over the years have varied, but he focused primarily on tennis, golf and running. Today he concentrates on enjoying nature while playing golf.
