Hunter was born in Richmond, Virginia and spent his childhood growing up in the picturesque town of Tappahannock. Being raised on the banks of the Rappahannock River, Hunter developed a passion for every water sport imaginable.
College led him to Virginia Tech and then to The University of South Florida. There he studied business and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Marketing. In 1988, he entered the insurance business and began marketing Tax Sheltered Annuity programs to Palm Beach County School teachers. Eventually Hunter saw opportunities in the voluntary benefits sector and redirected his efforts into that arena. In 1992, he founded Whittington Benefit Services, Inc., an enrollment and benefit communication organization with a focus on larger employers. His team of benefit counselors created enrollment benefit campaigns with the goal of educating employees about all of their insurance programs. In January 2008, Hunter aligned his organization with Benefits Technologies, allowing him to tap into many more resources and tools to bring to his client groups.
At the beginning of his career, an agent gave him some very wise words: “The insurance business is a part-time job – just pick any 12 hours of the day that you’d like!” Hunter says that although the insurance business has been very demanding, it has been richly rewarding. Hunter has had the continued support of his wife, Wendy, for the past 22 years, and his identical twin boys. “I never dreamed that I would be in this business as a career, but now can’t imagine that my life would have been as full if I had done anything else.”
